Ferry County Railtrail SKI DAY

Ski day draws crowd By Brenda Starkey  Ferry County View (published with permission)
REPUBLIC – Conditions were near perfect for the ninth annual Ski Day on the Ferry County Rail Trail Saturday, according to organizers.
Despite warm weather and melting snow conditions last week, snowfall late in the week and volunteers grooming the trail from Kiwanis Road south on Friday led to near-perfect conditions, according to Ferry County Rail Trail Partners President Bob Whittaker.
Some 150 individuals took advantage of the annual event to learn or sharpen cross country skiing skills. Spokane Parks and Recreation, Altai Skis and Northwest Bushwhackers supplied equipment and instruction for the event. The Republic Tree Benders Snowmobile/ATV Club’s Don Keith loaned a machine to groom the trail when the FCRTP’s broke down. Kevin Metcalf groomed the trail and Johnny Metcalf provided snow plowing. The event was free for attendees, organized and paid for by FCRTP with community donations.
Photo Participants at the ninth annual Rail Trail Ski Day came in all ages and used all methods of conveyance. While most chose cross country skis, Oliver Scott traveled by boat-sled. The vehicle also has wheels for summer and a sail for boating. Photo: J. Foster Fanning Photography
